MACK GAVITT

ORCHARD DRIVE

Never a lien, but check it anyway. They’re a bear to clean up after the fact.
Original
registry number flying on the side of a C150. Couldn’t get it.
Vert.
Stab. Not original. It is from a later model & is bigger.
Sept . Or Oct . Annual?
Two known problems.
Comm
antenna. Probably can fix here .
Runs way too rich. I’d talk to Richard about the carb. I
know we sent it to Texas(?) for rebuild. Maybe twice. Spare carb with spare
engine. Don’ t sell the spare until you get 50 hours on the new engine . Logs for Both engines.
Richard
has a mag he was to rebuild. I’m sure he hasn’t. Get the mag.
I don’t
like the new prop. I’d like to keep the old one and will get you the info on
it. Transponder fixed. Loran fixed and d base updated. Fuel valve fixed and flow checked.
Tail
wheel is solid. I’ll bet it takes a year to get the shimmy out. I have the
correct spanner to adjust . Remind me about it.
All spares go. If you ding the prop, I’ll send the old one.
Be careful with the fuel caps. It
vents thru the cap.
I’d burn one hr., Switch tanks, burn 1 hr. Repeat and then — on the third burn- time it until the engine
burped. The
theory being that you now know how much time you have remaining. Don’t use this
method. I was on short final to an Iowa corn patch when it came back to life.
Fairchild’s are famous for fuel starvation problems . Check the caps every time.
There’ s nothing on the mag advance . Full in is full advance . Pull for retard .
Leave it in unless the engine is cold soaked. Say below 40
degrees or so. Retard, prime, engage starter, wait two blades, then switch the
mags on . Slowly
advance after a minute or so.
You’ll have to find the hot start combination for this
engine. Remember we had a hot start problem in Tullahoma .
I have never been a fan of the fuel drain location.
Wiring is per diagram, not manual. It has not been
thoroughly tested. Do not transmit and run the landing light down at the same
time before you do it during a ground check .
it
used to shut down the electrical system .
The
generator switch, knob, when out takes the generator off line.. Let’ s check this with the
new wiring and make sure it does go to the generator field.
My thoughts are that the airplane has to be regularly flown or it will rapidly deteriorate. It’s a no tricks girl. It might be the best airplane for today’s pilot to transition to a round engine with the little wheel in the back. You don’t just fly a 145 Warner. It requires a lot of simple, routine maintenance. It’s highly unlikely that I’ll get my medical back. Our children have no interest in flying or old airplanes. I’ve played by the rules too long to change. If I did cheat, I’d get caught. I always have.
I promised myself I would never add up what i spent on N2088. After all, life ought to have some luxury and extravagance. The rest of what goes with the old airplane infirmity has to go or I’ll end up with another airplane. It’s that collection of books and junk that only has value to those with the disease and should go to someone that has this expensive bug, but not the funds to prolong the illness. We should find somebody that would learn from them. Can’ t send them to someone that collects or hoards. A classic symptom of the old airplane sickness is hoarding.
I have no idea what N2088 is worth. We’ll work it out over a
case of beer and a bottle of thunderbird . However, I would not plan to have
any other assets but the Fairchild and a job when we have polished off the
brew.
